2017 Aging As Art Bowers Museum Photographers Reception

The Council on Aging-Southern California (COASC) hosted an evening with the photographers on March 7th for its 4th Annual Aging as Art Photography Show. The Aging as Art Photography Show is a photographic journey celebrating the diversity, dignity, and beauty of the aging experience. Through the artistic expressions of professional and amateur photographers, this juried show affirms the wisdom and character achieved from a life well lived.

We embarked upon Aging as Art with little knowledge about photography contests. This past winter, 200 photographs from amateur and professional photographers were submitted and anonymously judged by our distinguished panel of jurors. The panel consisted of 6 accomplished and recognized professional artists including Michele Cardon, Director of Photography for the Orange County Register, Jacques Garnier, President of The Legacy Project, Laurie Mirman, Founder and President of Site Services, Rita Swanson, graphic designer and illustrator, and decorated photographers, Laurel Hungerford and Barbara White.

“Each year the show is different, evoking different emotions and thoughts. The work of every photographer is breathtaking. The photographs in the 2017 Aging as Art Show capture a story and we hope to alter our perceptions of aging.” – Lisa Wright Jenkins, CEO & President, Council on Aging – Southern California

Of the 200 photographs submitted, 10 received an award, including a first place, second place, third place and two honorable mentions, and 52 were selected to be displayed for a total of 62 photographs.

“Today, with digital photography everyone can be a photographer. However, so few photos are printed and enjoyed for more than an instant on the small screens of our phones, tablets and laptops. This is why it is such an honor for our photographers to have a print of their perception of aging displayed at the Bowers Museum.” – Lisa Wright Jenkins, CEO & President, Council on Aging – Southern California
